Title: How do you handle customs declarations and VAT when shipping business inventory
Post by: nicolaus.gray on July 17, 2026, 05:41:14 AM
We are expanding our retail business and starting to supply local shops in the Channel Islands with our organic food products. While Guernsey is technically part of the British Isles, I know they have a completely different tax jurisdiction and are outside the UK VAT territory.

I'm struggling to figure out how to correctly declare our business-to-business shipments so they don't get held up at the port. Any advice on the logistics side?

The tax and customs side of shipping to the Channel Islands catches so many businesses off guard. Since Guernsey is outside the UK VAT area, your invoices must be zero-rated, but you still have to lodge proper customs declarations. I highly recommend partnering with an experienced forwarder that coordinates commercial freight to Guernsey (https://www.barringtonfreight.co.uk/road-freight/guernsey/) on a regular basis. A specialist carrier will handle the exit and entry declarations for you as part of the booking, ensuring your paperwork is 100% compliant so your retail customers don't get hit with unexpected clearance fees or major delivery delays at the harbor.
