Title: Narrowing plant choices for a tricky shady corner
Post by: jamesmark on October 19, 2026, 02:18:06 AM
My back corner is dry shade under a big maple, and I spent hours scrolling nursery catalogs with nothing to show for it. Most plants labeled "shade tolerant" assume moist soil, which I definitely don't have. The tree roots take every drop of water.

A friend suggested the plant finder on Gardenvoila (https://gardenvoila.com/plant-finder/), where you filter by conditions, so I tried sorting by shade and dry soil. The list shrank to something manageable, and a couple of options I'd never heard of showed up. I haven't planted yet, so I can't say how they'll perform.

Still, starting from conditions instead of looks felt smarter. Has anyone had luck filtering first and picking second? I'm curious whether the shortlist matched your real-world results, especially in tough spots under trees.
