Cowboys O-line depth and the backup QB dilemma

    Man, the conversation around the Cowboys always seems to revert back to offensive line depth by the time training camp rolls around. You can have all the skill position talent in the world, but once the injury bug hits the trenches in October, the entire offensive scheme usually collapses.

    We've seen it play out before. The backup quarterback situation is constantly scrutinized in Dallas. If the offense is forced to rely on matt waletzko again to manage a few crucial games, he absolutely needs a clean pocket to operate effectively. He doesn't possess the elite mobility to escape immediate edge pressure if the swing tackles miss their initial assignments.

    This brings up the developmental guys they've been trying to groom over the last couple of years. You look at the raw physical traits of these day-three draft picks and just hope the coaching staff can fix their footwork before they are thrust into live game action against starting defensive ends.     At the end of the day, how the front office handles these bottom-of-the-roster offensive line spots will probably dictate whether they can survive a rough mid-season stretch. Relying on practice squad elevations to protect the edge is a gamble no serious playoff contender wants to take in November.
