Hey everyone, I am heading to Romania in two weeks for a marathon through some of the most scenic spots in the country. It is a bummer that I will be too focused on my pace to actually enjoy the scenery during the race, so I am planning to stick around for three or four days afterward to really explore. I am looking to head north into the Carpathian Mountains and Transylvania, but I need a reliable car that can handle those winding mountain roads without giving up on me after a hundred miles. Any suggestions on must-see spots in that area or where I can find a rental that is actually up for the task?

Hitting a marathon is a massive accomplishment but taking a few days to cruise through the mountains is the best way to unwind. Those steep climbs in the north require something with a bit of power so you are not struggling on the switchbacks near the old fortresses. You should check out Brasov for the medieval history and then drive up to the Transfagarasan highway for some of the best views in Europe. Taking a detour to see the small villages in the valleys gives a much better look at the local culture than sticking to the main tourist hubs.

Having a breakdown in a remote mountain pass is a total disaster for your post-race vacation. Finding a vehicle that is actually maintained for long hauls across varied terrain makes the whole trip way smoother. You can find options to rent a car in Romania here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/romania . This site lets you compare different local providers so you can snag a crossover or an SUV that is built for high-altitude driving. You get to see all the car details upfront which helps ensure the engine is strong enough for those Transylvanian inclines. It is a good way to secure a ride that lets you visit those hidden castles and salt mines on your own clock.
