An externship is like a school field trip to a workplace! You: 
-Watch professionals work (doctors, engineers, etc.) 
-Ask questions about their job 
-Take notes about what you see 
It's usually unpaid and very short (1-5 days) - perfect for trying out different jobs before picking one.
